उत्तरप्रदेश के बागपत जिले के सिनौली गाँव के नीचे प्राचीन भारत का इतिहास दबा हुआ है. यहां पर आर्कियोलॉजिकल सर्वे ऑफ़ इंडिया (ASI) की टीम ने खोदाई की तो जमीन से नर कंकाल, समाधि, तांबे के कड़े, म्यान, तलवार, धनुष-बाण, स्वर्णाभूषण, मिट्टी के बर्तन, खंडहरनुमा रसोई आदि निकली है. खुदाई में प्राचीन भारत के रथ और हथियार भी पाए गए हैं. सबसे बड़ी विशेषता यह है कि यहाँ कवच पहने एक स्त्री की भी समाधि मिली है जिसके पास ताम्बे की एंटीना तलवार मिली है. भारत में आर्यों के आक्रमण की थ्योरी को झुठलाते ये प्रमाण अब लोगों में चर्चा का विषय है.
पुरातत्ववेत्ताओं की राय
पुरातत्ववेत्ताओं के अनुसार सिनौली कि समाधि शाही समाधि है. यहाँ राजा या सामंत और उनके लोग दफनाये गये हैं. भारतीय पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण विभाग के पूर्व सुपरीटेंडेंट आर्कियोलॉजिस्ट और इतिहासविद् कौशल किशोर शर्मा कहते हैं कि “सिनौली में हमें वो मिला, जो अब तक भारत में कभी-कहीं नहीं मिला. सिनौली की संस्कृति का संबंध उत्तर वैदिक काल और हड़प्पा सभ्यता के बीच की संस्कृति का प्रतीत होता है.”
ASI के निदेशक (उत्खनन) संजय मंजुल के अनुसार, दफनाने की अवधि २००० से १८०० ईसा पूर्व की हो सकती है, जो लेट हड़प्पा संस्कृति के समकालीन है, लेकिन उससे अलग है जो गेरू रंग के बर्तनों (OCP / कॉपर होर्ड कल्चर) से संबंधित है. मंजुल के अनुसार, “भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में पहली बार, किसी खुदाई से रथों को बरामद किया गया है. यहाँ मिले रथ युद्ध में इस्तेमाल किये जाने वाले इंडो-आर्यन तकनीक के है. उन्होंने आगे उल्लेख किया कि “सिनौली के समाधियों से संबंधित अनुष्ठानों के वैदिक अनुष्ठानों के साथ घनिष्ठता दिखाई देती है” और अनुमान व्यक्त किया कि “महाभारत की डेटिंग लगभग १७५० ईसा पूर्व हो सकता है.
अन्य पुरातत्ववेत्ताओं के अनुसार २००० ईसा पूर्व के आसपास मेसोपोटामिया और अन्य संस्कृतियों में जिस तरह के रथ, तलवार-ढाल और हेलमेट (टोपा) युद्ध में इस्तेमाल किए जाते थे, उसी काल के आसपास यहां भी वो चीजें थीं. ये तकनीकी रूप से काफी उन्नत थीं और अन्य सभ्यताओं के समकालीन या उससे थोड़ा पहले ही यहां आ चुकी थीं.
सिनौली की खुदाई में क्या मिला
इस गांव में खोदाई सबसे पहले २००५ में हुई. इसके बाद ही ASI ने खोदाई कर यहां से १०६ मानव कंकाल निकाले थे. दूसरे चरण में २०१७ और तीसरे चरण में २०१९ में हुई खोदाई में एक से बढ़कर एक वस्तुएं निकलीं.
पुरातत्व सर्वेक्षण विभाग द्वारा सिनौली में करवाई जा रही खुदाई में एक सीक्रेट चैम्बर होने की जानकारी मिली है. इस चैम्बर को अंतिम संस्कार के लिए शव को लाए जाने के बाद लेप आदि लगाने में इस्तेमाल किया जाता था जिसके उपरान्त उसे ताबूत में रख कर भूमि के भीतर दफना दिया जाता था. इस चैम्बर में दक्षिण दिशा से प्रवेश के संकेत पाए गए हैं. दफ़नाने से पूर्व शवों को हिन्दू संस्कृति के अनुसार वस्त्र लपेटने और पवित्र किये जाने के भी प्रमाण मिले हैं. शवों के पास मिले बर्तनों में चावल के दाने और राख के अवशेष मिले हैं.
यहाँ मुख्य रूप से प्राथमिक समाधि हैं और कुछ की पहचान माध्यमिक, एकाधिक और प्रतीकात्मक समाधि के रूप में हुई है जिसमें पुरुष और महिला दोनों के समाधि शामिल हैं. समाधि में आमतौर पर सिर के पास विषम संख्या में बर्तन / कटोरे (विषम संख्यां हिन्दुओं में शुभ माना जाता है) हैं, जिनमें आमतौर पर कूल्हे के साथ-साथ फ्लास्क के आकार के बर्तनों, टेराकोटा के मूर्तियाँ, सोने के कंगन और तांबे की चूड़ियाँ, अर्ध-कीमती पत्थरों की मालाएँ अदि मिले हैं. अन्य खोजों में तांबे के हेलमेट, तांबे के एंटीना तलवारें, तांबे की तलवारें, ढाल, तांबे से बने एक करछुल, ग्रे-वेयर पॉटरी, बड़े टेराकोटा के बर्तन, भड़कीले रिम्स के साथ लाल फूलदान, तांबे के नाखून, माला और चाबुक शामिल हैं.
तिन प्रमुख समाधियों का वर्णन
सात मानव समाधि में तिन ताबूत समाधि है अर्थात इनमें शवों को काठ के ताबूत में रखकर दफनाया गया है. सभी समाधियों में सिर उत्तर कि ओर और पैर दक्षिण की ओर हैं और उनके आगे उपर निचे बर्तन रखे हैं. ताम्बे के सामान समाधि के निचे रखे हुए हैं.
एक नम्बर की प्राथमिक ताबूत समाधि में दोनों ओर दो पूर्ण आकर के रथ रखे हुए हैं जिसका ढांचा घोड़ा गाड़ी जैसा है पर वहां घोड़े या बैल के अवशेष नहीं मिले हैं. लकड़ी के ताबूत चार पैरों पर खड़ी है और पैर सहित पूरा ताबूत ताम्बे के पट्टी से चारों ओर से ढंकी हैं.
लकड़ी के रथ में दो ठोस पहिये हैं. पहिया एक निश्चित धुरा पर घुमता था जो एक शाफ्ट द्वारा योक से जुड़ा होता था. रथ मोटी तांबे की चादरों से ढके हैं. पहियों को तांबे से बने त्रिकोणों से सजाया गया है. सीट अर्ध-वृत्ताकार है. सीट का फ्रेम तांबे के पाइप से बना है. उपर छतरी लगाने के लिए एक पाइप भी दिखाई देता है.
प्राथमिक ताबूत समाधि दो: तीसरा रथ भी एक अन्य लकड़ी के ताबूत समाधि के साथ मिली है. समाधि स्थल में एक वायलिन के आकार का ढाल (तांबे में ज्यामितीय पैटर्न के साथ सजाया गया), एक मशाल, एक एंटीना तलवार, एक खंती, सैकड़ों मोतियों और विभिन्न प्रकार के बर्तन भी मिले हैं. रथ में, अन्य दो के विपरीत, पोल और योक पर तांबे के त्रिकोण के सजावट है.
तीसरी प्राथमिक ताबूत समाधि बिना तांबे के ढक्कन के हैं. यह एक महिला का कंकाल है जो एक कवच पहने हुए है. इसके कोहनी के चारों ओर बंधी हुई एगेट मोतियों से बना है. इसमें १० लाल बर्तन के साथ भड़कीला रिम्स, चार कटोरे, दो बेसिन और एक एंटीना तलवार है.
आखिर कौन थे ये लोग?
अब मैं आपको मध्य एशिया के शकों (Scythians) में प्रचलित शवाधान की प्रक्रिया से परिचित करवाता हूँ. आप जानकर दंग रह जायेंगे कि मध्य एशिया के शकों में प्रचलित शावाधन की प्रक्रिया वही है जो उत्तरप्रदेश के सिनौली में मिली शवाधान की प्रक्रिया है.
“विवाह प्रथा शकों में बहुत प्रारम्भिक रूप में थी. कई भाईयों की एक स्त्री हो सकती थी. पुरुषों की एक से अधिक पत्नी हो सकते थे. किसी सरदार के मरने पर उसकी एक पत्नी को अवश्य कब्र में अपने पतिका साथ देना पड़ता था. मिस्र के सामंतों की तरह शकों में भी शव-क्रिया बड़ी शान से सम्पन्न होती थी. मृत सरदार के साथ उन सभी चीजों को कब्र में रख दिया जाता था, जिनकी उसे जीवन में जरूरत पडती थी. सभी तरह के हथियार, आभूषण, खान-पान की चीजें और घोड़ों को ही कब्र में नहीं रखा जाता था, बल्कि दास-दसियों को भी स्वामी के साथ जाना पड़ता था. पुराने शकों में सामंतों के शव दफ़नाने का रिवाज था.
मुर्दा दफ़नाने के साथ साथ शकों में मुर्दा जलाने का भी रिवाज था. उस समय पत्नी को साथ भेजने केलिए जिन्दा जलाने की जरूरत पड़ती थी, जिसे एक अरब पर्यटक ने अपनी आँखों देखा था.
तीर और भाले के फल ही नहीं इनके कुल्हाड़े और लम्बी सीधी तलवारें भी पीतल की होती थी. इनकी स्त्रियाँ पुरुषों कि भांति युद्ध में लड़ती थी, और कितनी ही बार सेना का नेतृत्व भी करती थी.
१९९० के दशक में खोजे गए एक पाजीरीक शक समाधि में एक पुरुष और एक महिला के कंकाल पाए गये. प्रत्येक के पास हथियार, तीर-कमान और एक कुल्हाड़ी थी. शक महिला योद्धा पुरुषों के समान ही कपड़े पहने हुए थे. (विकिपीडिया, शक)
सोवियत रूस के अल्ताई क्षेत्र में मिले शकों के समाधियों का वर्णन रूसी पुरातत्ववेत्ताओं ने इस प्रकार किया है:
दृढ देवदार से बनी शव पेटिका इतनी भारी थी, कि उसे बिना अलग अलग किए बाहर निकालना असम्भव था. सबसे पहले मजबूती से फिट किए हुए उपर के ढक्कन को हटाया गया…उनकी संख्यां दो थी-एक शक सैनिक शरीर दूसरा उसकी पत्नी. प्राचीन प्रथा के अनुसार घर की सबसे बढिया चीजों को भी मृत व्यक्ति के साथ दफना दिया जाता था….
अबतक हुई खुदाई से पुरातत्वविदों को यह मालूम हो गया कि कब्र की दीवार के पीछे उन्हें घोड़े मिलेंगे. सचमुच उन्होंने एक लकड़ी की दीवार देखी, जिसके पीछे चौदह सुंदर घोड़े दफनाये हुए थे. ये सब के सब अपने शानदार साज सामान के साथ सुरक्षित थे. लकड़ी पर नक्काशी के काम और सोने के पत्र से सुसज्जित जीन, विविध रंगों से युक्त घोड़े के लबादे और रेशम की बनी ओहरे सभी बहुत सुंदर थी.

उपर्युक्त से स्पष्ट है कि बागपत के सिनौली गाँव में मिले समाधि और शवाधान की प्रक्रिया मध्य एशिया और सोवियत रूस के अल्ताई में मिले शकों कि समाधियों के समान है. सिर्फ एक बड़ा अंतर दिखाई देता है और वह यह है कि उन शकों की समाधियों में शक सामंतों, राजाओं के साथ उनके घोड़े भी दफ़ना दिए जाते थे जबकि सिनौली में तिन तिन रथ तो मिला है पर घोड़े के अवशेष नहीं मिले हैं. ऐसा लगता है चूँकि मध्य एशिया के शक ईस्वी सन के बाद भी विकास के स्तर में पिछड़े थे और घुमन्तु जीवन जीना बेहतर समझते थे, इसलिए वे ज्यादातर घोड़े की ही सवारी करते थे रथों कि नहीं. इसलिए उनके शवों के साथ उनके घोड़े दफनाये जाते थे. परन्तु भारतीय सभ्यता उस समय भी विकास के उच्च शिखर पर थी. यहाँ रथों का इस्तेमाल व्यापक स्तर पर होता था इसलिए यहाँ शवों के साथ घोड़े नहीं बल्कि जिस रथ पर वे खड़े होते थे उन रथों को साथ में दफना दिया जाता था.
परन्तु इसका यह कतई मतलब नहीं है कि ऐसा मानवीय आधार पर अनावश्यक जीव हत्या न करने के उद्देश्य से किया जाता होगा क्योंकि मध्य एशिया की तरह यहाँ भी राजाओं या सामंतों के शवों के साथ उनकी दास दासियाँ दफना दिए गये हैं जो ९८ साधारण कब्रों में दिखाई देती हैं जिनमें स्त्री, पुरुष और बच्चे तक शामिल हैं.
भारत की महाभारतकालीन संस्कृति और शकों कि संस्कृति में समानता
मेरे दिमाग में यह प्रश्न उठता था कि आखिर सम्राट युद्धिष्ठिर को महाभारत में कहीं कहीं पर “शक” क्यों कहा गया है. शकों की संस्कृति का अध्ययन के दौरान इस प्रश्न का उत्तर मिलता है. निचे शकों की इन संस्कृतियों पर ध्यान दीजिए.
“शकों की विवाह प्रथा में कई भाईयों की एक स्त्री हो सकती थी. उस स्त्री की सन्तान सबसे बड़े भाई का सन्तान माना जाता था. पुरुष एक से अधिक विवाह कर सकते थे. (History of Civilizations of Central Asia. Paris: UNESCO Publishing. pp. 138–165)
किसी सरदार के मरने पर उसकी एक पत्नी को अवश्य कब्र में अपने पति का साथ देना पड़ता था. मुर्दा दफ़नाने के साथ साथ शकों में मुर्दा जलाने का भी रिवाज था. उस समय पत्नी को साथ भेजने केलिए जिन्दा जलाने की जरूरत पड़ती थी. इनकी स्त्रियाँ पुरुषों कि भांति युद्ध में लड़ती थी, और कितनी ही बार सेना का नेतृत्व भी करती थी.
चीन और ग्रीक लेखक इस बात से सहमत हैं कि शकों का मुख्य भोजन मांस और मुख्य पान दूध था. वे युद्ध में प्रथम गिरे शत्रु का गरमा गरम खून पी जाते थे.”
अब महाभारत में देखिए. पांच पांडवों की एक संयुक्त पत्नी द्रोपदी थी. कुछ भाईयों के अलग अलग पत्नियाँ भी थीं. पांडवों के पिता महाराज पांडू के मरने पर महारानी कुंती ने बड़ी होने के नाते सती होने का प्रस्ताव रखा था पर बाद में उनकी छोटी पत्नी माद्री के अनुरोध पर महाराज पांडू कि चिता के साथ माद्री सती हो गयी थी. मद्र देश की राजकुमारी और महाराज पांडू की पत्नी माद्री युद्ध विद्या में पारंगत थी. महाभारत युद्ध में महाबली भीम द्वारा दु:शासन के छाती का लहू पीना सबको पता है.
मुझे तो अभी इतनी ही समानता मिली है. सम्भव है महाराज युद्धिष्ठिर के चरित्र में शकों की संस्कृति से सम्बन्धित और भी कुछ विशेषताएँ हो जिनके कारण उन्हें कई बार युधिष्ठिर शक कहा गया है. वैसे चक्रवर्ती सम्राट विक्रमादित्य के पौत्र शालिवाहन केलिए भी शालिवाहन शक का प्रयोग हुआ है.
ऋगवैदिक काल और वैदिक कालीन भारतवर्ष में अंत्येष्टि क्रिया के कई तरीके प्रचलन में थे जिसे आप नीचे दिए गये पृष्ठ पर पढ़कर समझ सकते हैं:
उपर्युक्त से स्पष्ट है शकों कि संस्कृति भारतीय संस्कृति से मिलती जुलती थी. इसीलिए तो मध्य एशिया का इतिहास लिखनेवाले राहुल सांकृत्यायन कहते हैं, “शकों और आर्यों का भेद चाहे कितना भी हो पर विशाल इंडो-आर्यन वंश पर विचार करें तो वह भेद नगण्य प्रतीत होता है. मध्य एशिया से इंडो यूरोपीय लोगों का यूरोप में जाना सभी स्वीकार करते हैं और यह मानते हैं कि ऐसा नवपाषाण काल में हुआ.”
मध्य एशिया के शकों कि संस्कृति तो स्पष्ट है भारतीय संस्कृति से मिलती थी. सवाल है, मध्य एशिया के शक क्या कभी भारतवर्ष के रहनेवाले थे? आखिर ये शक लोग कौन थे?
